Paul Carl Kiefer, Jr. teaches Advanced Placement Human Geography, State Dual Credit World History, Personal Finance and the high school level Health course. He completed his degree at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and pursued graduate studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He has certifications in history, ELA, health and wellness, Jobs for Tennessee Graduates, personal finance, and service learning. Carl is a member of the Consortium for Teaching About East Asia, an avid reader and a cruciverbalist (crossword puzzle enthusiast).
Carl is also an outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, canoeing, trail running, cycling and playing Ultimate Frisbee at competition level. Carl is very service-minded and helps with every Ivy cleanup day, the annual Tennessee River Cleanup, MLK Day of Service, and, most recently, the semi-annual Quaker Meeting House of Chattanooga grounds cleanup. Carl chose Ivy Academy several years ago as the place to teach because of the campus setting, departure from the typical curriculum, and the small class sizes.
Carl’s life philosophy is summarized in those quote by Albert Camus:
“In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm. No matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there's something stronger -- something better, pushing right back.”
